Exhibition Artist: Aamena Jahan

In this series, we will spotlight the four pieces that were commissioned for the Bridges not Borders Exhibition of South Asian Art (September 2024).

Aamena Jahan’s Self Portraits in Truck Art represent the sides of a Pakistani truck. In January 2024, Year 6 students of Queensgate Foundation Primary, Isle of Wight, produced creative self portraits in the Truck Art style, for which they were awarded Discover Arts Award badges. Aamena incorporated all fifty-seven pieces into her bright and exciting digital art. We printed these pieces on 80x60cm mounted boards that attracted great attention at the exhibition.

Aamena says: The self portraits are vibrant and imaginative reflections that capture the young artists’ joy and energy for life. I have featured them as the panels on the sides of a truck, which I’ve decorated with popular Truck Art poetry and the traditional phool (flower) and patti (leaf) designs of Pakistani Truck Art.

Now that the exhibition has ended, the artwork will be donated to Queensgate Foundation Primary on the Isle of Wight so the school’s children, teachers and parents can enjoy the pieces for years to come.
